Entertaiment is a fascinating and diverse topic, reflecting the many ways we seek out entertainment. As a category, it includes everything from a dinner adapted to an individual’s dietary restrictions; to performances geared to thousands of people; to games played for fun and sometimes even for money. Some necessary skills, such as archery or fencing, have developed into serious sports and even professions for the participants; but at the same time they may be re-staged for entertainment and broadcast to a global audience. And even a story, such as Scheherazade from Persian professional storytelling tradition, can inspire a re-telling in other media: orchestral works by composers like Rimsky-Korsakov or Ravel; films by directors Pasolini and Bergman; and innovative video games.
